Honors in Black Studies

To qualify for honors, a student must demonstrate consistently high performance in the major and complete a senior thesis during his or her senior year. Specifically, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 in Black Studies courses, with no grade below a B in any single course. A senior who meets these criteria and who is interested in pursuing departmental honors must notify the Director of Undergraduate Studies during the fall of their senior year. The student will select a thesis adviser in consultation with the DUS, who also serves as Honors Coordinator. The thesis adviser can be a member or an affiliate of the Department. Completion of the thesis ordinarily requires at least two quarters, during which the student and thesis adviser are expected to meet regularly. Merely completing a thesis does not guarantee honors; the thesis adviser and one other faculty member, selected by the honors coordinator, must recommend the project for honors to the Office of the Dean.
